Genuine Works

The Book of James was written by the Senior Elder/Pastor of the church in the city of Jerusalem. Pastor James was the brother (half-brother) of Jesus. He was a recognized spiritual leader in his city and he was tremendously pragmatic when it came to his view of the Christian faith. He writes a short letter to the Christians scattered among the nations of the world and we learn from his words what 1st Century Christianity looked like, at least from the viewpoint of this very insightful pastor. Let’s look at them this morning…

Genuine Love

This morning’s message is entitled “genuine love” and the individual that I’d like to look to to give us insight is not a pastor but an apostle. His name is Simon Peter and the first thing I want you to remember about him is that he was a ragamuffin long before he was an apostle. His early faith in Jesus Christ resembled a checkerboard of good moves and mind-numbing blunders. One moment he’s actually walking on water in the Sea of Galilee because he wanted to do what his “rabbi” was doing and the next moment he nearly drowns. In one setting the Lord praised him for seeing what others could not see about “Christ the Messiah” and just a few minutes later Jesus calls Simon Peter “Satan” to highlight that Simon was deceived as to the plan and purposes of God upon the earth.
